To my experience, the response quote for QSL-requests is a
little bit lower for contest QSO's than for other QSO's;
no matter if you are sending direct or via the bureau.
I for myself prefer the bureau in almost all cases.
Just some thoughts ..
If a contester is QSL-ing via direct only, then he should know,
that the total cost for a QSL-requesting DX-HAM will be minimal US$ 2
and sometimes more. To my experience all active well known contesters
are knowing this fact! If a contester is answering QSL requests via
direct only, then he has two reasons only to do so:
1. It is a smart method to reduce the QSL-ing workload down
 to a very low minimum.
2. Mostly it does not cost him one penny, because the
 requesting HAM will receive a card only, if he is paying
 for the postage and often for the printing also.
But this same contester wants, that everyone knows the contest rules,
that everyone sends his callsign and the exchange fast and correct in
the expected format, that everyone will call him on all bands, that
everyone will QSY to an other band to hand out a multiplier to him;
but never anyone should bother him with a QSL-request via bureau!
All contesters are trying to build the best station they can. All
of them are buying the best equipment they can get for their money.
Many of them are answering bureau cards, but also many do not; in the
sense of: "Give me your points, move away and do not bother me with
your bureau card afterwards".

Just some thoughts .. ;-)
BTW: This weekend I was active in the CQ WW SSB, looking for new
ones, new band points and was handing out my points to those, who
have responded to my QSL request via the causal way. ~:)
Good luck in QSL-ing!

Big antennas, high in the sky, are better than small ones, low!
