Mike & John,
I hear both sides of this issue. This discussion encapsulates the
significant differences between contesters and DX'ers.
I would tend to follow John on this one and here is why. In contests,
the number of contesters is basically fixed. Propagation can favor some
and leave others in the dust. If propagation were all equal, the difference
in scores would end up being part time contesters and hunt and peck DX'ers.
The price of being a top contest station just might turn out to be the best
QSL'er for DX'ers.
That being said, I have NEVER sent a domestic QSL request without an
SASE. There is a famous Contest station that I have attempted SASE's
on numerous tries with no answer. I will never work that station again,
even
if it is on 24Ghz moonbounce.
On the other side, I think that if a domestic operator needs a QSL for
whatever DX he/she is chasing. I think the operator should send an
SASE as he knows he is chasing a contest station and QSL'ing even
one contest can get ridiculous. For the contest station to ignore SASE's
is inexcusable.
