Hello!
I can't agree with you, Tom!
I obtained my licence in last year and made just 329 QSO only on 10
meters (86 countries/64 IOTA islands).
But 90% of time when I on air I'm SWL. I SWL since 1991(confirmed 293
countries/521 IOTA islands/312 islands for most popular national award
programs). I also look for lighthouses, Holyland activities, WAB,
DCI(castles of Italy) and etc.
As some other guys said - no time to log 2 or 3 WKD stations, when you
take part in contest as SWL. And also there is no reason to make many
SWL's if DX station is strong and has clear signal. Also if
propagation is poor or DX station has weak signal or QSB - there is a
problem to log many SWL, because sometimes I sure only in one or two
SWL's, when I heard both stations sure.
Sometime I use cluster, but I never use cluster messages as SWL.
I think if I miss rare DX - it's not a tragedy - may be some times
later I will heard same station again. But big tragedy when no answer
for my 100% SWL's. For example, it's V26VG - I heard your station in
IOTA contest on 3 bands. It was in 1998, but still wait for QSL. Three
SWL's on one QSL as you need.
Also very interesting to know that I have only 20 cards with "not in
log" mark, 50 cards marked "can't be delivered by QSL-bureau", only
two QSL's marked "(s)he doesn't want" and wait answer for my 2500
bureau cards.
May be all problem when somebody doesn't want to answer?
First QSL which I received for my RV3ECW call was QSL from SP-SWL for
IOTA 2001.
And second QSL was also from same SWL-station. It's not joke.
First time he logged my call as RC3ECW, but I returned his QSL's with mark
"incorrect call". It's normal situation. Second SWL was OK in my log
and my call was correct. So, this SWL station sent two QSL's for me and
will received two answering QSL's.
Interesting to know when other stations will do same for me?
73!

TW> As well as dealing with my own cards (several thousand per year) I also
TW> managed several DX stations and therefore I get a fair number of SWL Cards.
TW> I am one of the "old school" operators who WAS a short wave listener for
TW> many years before obtaining my licence in 1975. I still spen a great deal of
TW> time just listening - thats why god gave us ONE mouth and TWO ears. I also
TW> used to enjoy receiving cards from all around the world.
TW> Having just completed a marathon session of QSL cards, I really have to
TW> question the worth of some of today's SWL reports.
TW> I dont think its of any particular value to be told by (E.G.) a german short
TW> wave listener that he heard me 5/9 when I worked 15 German stations at the
TW> same time - who also gave me a 5/9 report.
TW> It is nice to get the odd report from a distant SWL station who heard me
TW> working somebody in a completely different part of the world.
TW> There were a few occasions in this buro bundle that I received cards from
TW> SWL's for contacts that I did not make. Now this is strange! I am
TW> beginning to wonder and suspect, that they saw me spotting DX stations on
TW> the cluster and assumed I worked them - and took a chance in sending me a
TW> card. I can't prove that, but dont have any other way of explaining it.
TW> The guys doing this are doing other SWL stations a great dis-service - as I
TW> am now seriously beginning to doubt if there is any value in receiving SWL
TW> cards - what-so-ever. Before i decide whether to continue to reply to SWL
TW> cards I seek the views of the DX community.
TW> A good SWL report for me, would be a report on an unusual QSO or a report
TW> from a part of the world where I would not expect there to be propagation -
TW> or some other fact which makes the QSO and report stand out.
TW> Maybe I'm just becoming pernickety in my old age.
TW> I would also welcome the views of serious SWL stations and a good reason why
TW> I should continue to reply to SWLs.
