I just had a similar experience this morning after working AP2AA on 10m and
thought that he might have been a pirate after he mentioned his qsl route as
W3HNK. I checked through the December issues of "The Daily DX" and my
suspicion was confirmed.
I have worked a few folks that turned out to be pirates over the years and
have ended up doing exactly as you do. With the DX4WIN logging program, I
mark the DXCC field as "invalid" and clearly mark it as a Pirate in the
notes field. It doesn't mess up any of the DXCC record keeping and is a
useful reminder that the guy was a fake.
