"You can't get there from here" to quote Firesign Theater . . .
At 312 MHz using a ridiculously thin wire only 9 thousandths of an inch,
a dipole would be about 18.55 inches.
Increasing the size of the "wire" to 1-7/8 inch diameter would reduce
the length to about 17.8 inches. Only 3/4 of an inch shorter!
You might be able to make the conductor even fatter, but at some point
it becomes no longer a dipole. Going fatter and fatter from this point I
believe it would turn into a non-dipole "something" long before the
length became as short as 6 inches.
