[Antennas] Antennas in trees.

Well, let me tell you about my "Hey guys watch this" moment....
I had been using my spud launcher for a while (Lighter Fluid / PVC). I used
a "skinned" golf ball with a hole drilled through it and a fishing leader
through the ball. Worked fine for going over a single tree of 100' or
so....Then one day I wanted to have a long wire antenna. I wanted it to go
over the 70-80 foot popular trees for about 50 or more yards....or as far as
I could launch the ball....after a couple of try's it was obvious that the
ball was not going to go near enough for the antenna I wanted. Hey if zippo
fluid would go 150 feet over a tree I wonder how far an Oxy-acetylene charge
would take the ball and line ?? !! Knowing the pressure was going to really
stress the bursting pressure of the 4" PVC I wrapped the chamber with some
2" webbing I had...Good thing....When I set the charge off the chamber went
BANG and shattered leaving a smoking doughnut shaped hole in my
sweats..kinda smelly in the back side I might add.. Lucky that was the only
damage. I never did learn how far the ball would go....Never saw it again.
The only thing left was the end of the fishing line where it had snapped
from the leader...
I use the compound bow technic now...
Mental note....don't use oxy-acetylene to power your PVC launcher.....Now
your Aluminum one is another story... :-).

My buddy wb6rvr bought a launcher years ago that used hairspray for the
propellent....we discovered it was way too volatile and
scary. Norm modified his launcher to use compressed air and he now can fire
a line easily over 100+ feet with lot'sa height to
spare!
At 90' these launchers are the only thing that will work......
I think our club's launchers will do 90'.. yes, agreed, the hairspray can
be very dangerous.
Ours is a PVC kit with a valve, you glue it together, close the valve, load
the projectile in,
put 30 PSI in it, aim, twist the valve... POOF...
www.joplin-arc.org then scroll down to the Store, click on the video..
it's yers truly..
one note, we shot the video literally the day before the May 22, 2011
tornado that
clobbered Joplin.. yes, including this park we shot the video at.. trees
were all gone.
