At the risk of starting a long thread, I don't think you'll see any
significant difference between a quad and a beam at 30 feet. The vertical
beamwidth of the quad is slightly narrower, but it is not significant compared to
the variations caused by the height of the antenna. The quad has the
advantage of a smaller turning radius, but may be more fragile in ice than a
beam.
As far as the height, I found a big difference between a beam and a wire
antenna at 30 feet, because the beam can be pointed in the direction of the
DX station. Whichever antenna you choose I recommend getting it up at least
30 feet.
