Yes, of course wood works but it changes things a lot too when it gets wet. 
If this is a test for adjusting something or seeing if it will work at all, 
fine, BUT, if it is expected to work anything near reliably and 
consistantly, apply several coats of spar-varnish to seal the wood against 
moisture and allow for more consistant operation.
If this wood thread continues, the moisture content problem needs to be 
mentined to those who are new and might not suspect the effect of the 
moisture soaked wood.
