[Antennas] 1/4 wave vert,

In my younger days when I was a Novice (1975) The best antenna I had
the most fun with was a full sized 1/4 wave vertical for 80 meters. I'm
thinking of putting up another before winter hits again.
But here's a question, Like Hy Gains Hy-Tower there are stubs that
stick out along the tower to make it resonate on all the bands. Quite
simple and elegant.
The RF energy simply looks to the part of the tower that "Fits" for
minimal SWR. Makes total sense. 80 meters being a band where bandwidth
on almost any antenna is hard to get, since the percentage of change is
so great. I was wondering, If i would make the vertical "Naturally
Resonant" for the bottom of the band,, and then add a stub lower down
that would make it resonate near the top. between 3.5 MHz and 4MHz
there is a 8 foot difference in length.
I wonder if that would work ?
Anyone ever try such a thing? the stubs work great when having large
freq differences like changing bands,
but would it also work in this situation?
