Dave: I believe that J poles are 1/2 wave with a 1/4 wave transmission line attached. .
Again, that's my understanding and I suspect your statement that J poles are 5/8 wave is a typo. You ment 4/8 wave, didn't you? At any rate, radials are not required, normally.
