An earth ground almost never hurts and only helps. I suppose there may be
some argument about using antennas which require no ground...maybe messing
up take-off angles or whatever?? Anyone?
BUT,... I use a 706 with a ScrewDriver antenna...
...sometimes when parked I clip a heavy ground cable to my auto and then
to a nearby grounded object like a chain-link fence, powerpole ground,
etc., etc. Keep your eyes open, you'll find lots of grounds to use in this
way.
