Dear Alan, 
I can't see the other posts, so they must be off-line. 
The only additional thing that I can suggest is that you need to make more dramatic changes just to make sure that the measured impedance is changing. Furthermore, I think as a sanity check you need to use additional methods of measuring SWR on the line as an independent check on the impedance changes. Obviously, it would be great were you able to borrow an MFJ-259 from someone.
