Use 2 pieces of RG-8U for the power leads. Run them direct from the battery to the shortest lead you can run to the radio. Ground both ends of the shields direct to the FRAME of your truck.
Check all of the grounding straps that came on your truck for good connections for all metal parts, hood, body, rear box, and engine to the frame. Add some more if you think you need them. Take a little time, it will be worth it.
I have an Icom 706-MkIIG with an Icom automatic antenna tuner feeding a Hamstick mounted on the corner of the box just behind my drivers seat, and a 2m/440 antenna on the other corner. I get out well on all freq. I do best by swapping Hamsticks for each band with a quick disconnect but can actually use the 80m one on all bands with the antenna tuner.
I tried using a 3 magnet mount on the roof and I believe I actually got out better. But it was too tall and kept hitting everything.
Oh yes, I am driving a 2002 Ford F250 - V-10 gas truck. I hear the ignition faintly if it really humid, Raining. I can check into the Sunday 20m nets from anywhere I have gone, pulling my 5th Wheel RV.
So, Yes you can cut down on the ignition noise in a Ford!

I am looking for ideas to reduce the received ignition noise in my mobile application. I have a Yaesu FT 890AT mounted in my 2000 Ford F250. I am using a hamstick that is mounted to the bed of the truck. The DC line runs direct from the battery and the radio is mounted overhead in the cab. I am getting a fair amount of what sounds like spark plug noise that varies with the engine speed that I would like to minimize.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
