Look at L.B.Cebik's web page... http://www.cebik.com/atl1.html His
information covers vertical and horizontal loop antennas. The Portland
Amateur Wireless Association (PAWA, Maine) uses a fullwave loop on field
days and has been successful with it. No traps are necessary. Full wave
loops exhibit NVIS characteristics that will fit your requirement of high
angle radiation for close-in coverage. It will probably work very well on
MARS frequencies also.
