Others have spoken to the reason and advantage of this method so I will
only add that in my younger days, the old timers referred to this type
of construction as a "birdcage antenna" and was used to make verticals
for low band usage for the same reason. Like a Windom or Zepp, its name
conveyed an image rather than exactness such as a G5RV.
