[Antennas] Yagi at 45 feet

Hello to the group,
I've just moved to a new QTH and I'm considering moving up (no pun intended)
to a tower and a yagi. I have only used dipoles before. I have two questions
I'd like to toss out to the forum:
1. I am thinking about a free standing mast at about 45 feet. There are
trees (60 footers) to the South and West of the location - maybe 30 feet
from the mast. Would one expect these trees to have any significant affect?
2. I am comparing two antennas: The larger (4 element) has a 3 dB advantage
over the shorter boom (3 element). Now, I understand the math. But, I'd like
for some old timers to tell me how much practical, on-the-air difference
there will be between these two antennas.
Thanks in advance to all who may have a thought to share.

Tom W3TMC
P.S. I'm looking at 20 meters and higher.
