Alan,
I use a common kitchen scrubber made by 3M... called SCOTCHBRITE... It is 
non-metallic and works very well with just water, or, if the aluminum is 
particularly grungy, use some COMET, or AJAX in a paste and flush it all off 
when you are satisfied with the results. Dry everything and apply the 
Penetrox to the joint when re-assembling the antenna.
