I prefer the Motorola mount somewhere near the center of the roof or 
farther back if it needs to clear a sun roof. I use a Larsen dual 
band whip with an air coil rather than an enclosed loading coil, 
quarter wave on two meters, 3/4 wave on 440, a NMOQ2/70B. You can get 
a small plastic cap from Motorola to put on the mount when the antenna 
is off or get a short 1.2gHz or 900mHz whip for when the radio isn't in 
the car.
