Ten inches is extremely good!
Less than a wavelength is probably good, where the desired path is over the
salt water.
Tom N6BT (Force 12) and Kenny K2KW made some interesting measurements
across San Francisco Bay with regard to distance from the salt

I'm two miles from the Pacific, but I doubt that it helps my signal much. 8-(
