I can tell you this:
Several years ago, I needed a minimal antenna for use when visiting my son
at his home in NC. I took my 20 meter vertical that was intended for
mounting on a car bumper and mounted it with a c-clamp to a wooden 6'
step-ladder. I used a ground rod driven into the ground to earth it. I ran
100 watts p.e.p. on 20 m SSB and worked anything I could hear.
Instead of the 6' stepladder, you could probably use an 8' pipe driven 4'
into the sand and get similar results.
