Hi All,
Well, if you are going to get fancy, you might try the Moxon rectangle for
40. It really is a two element beam, with the ends folded back. We built
one in 2002 and used it for field day 2002 and 2003, so it really is
portable. It has some gain over a dipole, and at the same elevation as a
dipole or inverted V, it has a lower angle of radiation. We hoisted it up
as high as we could get it from a 37' tower and 35' ladder. It drooped a
bit, but was at about 30'. Did real well. From SE New England, it covers
about 90 % of the US in it's 3 dB beamwidth. It used to bother me that for
field day and being in SE NE, a NS antenna wastes half of your power going
east. So resulted the beam.
