Dear Bert,
Seems like it would depend on the following:
- insulated wire or bare wire
- using for transmitting or receive-only
- whether it's wet or dry when in use
In other words, you haven't stated your problem well enough that one
could suggest much of an answer, other than the fact that ANY nearby
objects than can absorb RF (including even a dry tree), will seriously
affect an antenna - which is why most indoor antennas are crap.
However, the bottom line is, that you could surely do better with a
little effort, so why clown around.
