[Antennas] ?? on boat radio ATU

I was looking at an HF boat radio ATU tonite and trying to figure
if there was any practical use i could put it to - including parts.
What i want to ask about is the motor that turns the multisection
channel switch. This selects taps on the loading coils for the various
MF channels like 2009 kHz, etc. This motor, it probably simply is
a 12 dc type, right? If so, what tells it to stop? The unit i was looking
at cannot be too awfully sophisticated- i see only 1 large power 
transistor in it. The motor is about the size of those packaged 
sychronous AC motors used in electric clocks from the 1960s, that
means not very large.
