[Antennas] should I buy or build a dipole?

With a tuner such as the 941d you can just run a single end fed wire. I
have the exact same setup except the transceiver I use is a Kenwood
TS-2000. I use a piece of Black 14 Ga. THHN wire that happens to be a
little over 300 Ft. long. I ran it out of the basement, where the shack
is, up to the bottom of my eaves and around the house. I have no trouble
loading it on all bands, 6 through 80 mtrs. I have not had much luck on
160 mtrs, however. I use a small commercial antenna for 2 mtrs and 440.
I present a very inconspicuous antenna farm this way. The wire seems
very nondirectional. I assume it is because it actually runs in all 4
directions of the compass.
I know there are better antennas available, but not many cheaper or
easier to hide. I have worked South America, South Africa, Europe, both
eastern and western Russia with this setup and only 100 watts. Back in
the 60's and 70's I used a Johnson Ranger, less than 50 watts output, a
Johnson Matchbox, the small one with the built in SWR meter on AM and
tuned many antennas, including the eave trough itself.
When using a good tuner, have fun, experiment. You will be surprised
what you can do!
