Jim,
I have tried a few thing here and the greatest thing I have found is a
SGC 230! I know it takes all the "fun" out of antenna building. but
it just works..
The configuration I tried first with it was to run a loop around the
house, not much better then the R7000 dummy load I was using, next I
configured a inverted L of sorts about 40 feet high and about 30 feet
to the nearest tree. Used a 20 foot fiberglass pole on the roof to get
the height.
The thing that I belive makes it work is all the gounds I ran
everywhere! some out the back, to the front, around the house and if
my neighbors ever go on vacation, I'll poke a few wires under their
house too!
I works really well on 80 60 40 about the same as my TA33 on 20~10 I
have used it on 160 also making several contacts over 1000 mi., not
bad for 70 feet of wire.
The best thing about the SGC is if the antenna isn't working well just
add more gorunds or reconfigure it a small bit and let the "box " do
it's thing. If you look a the plans for most wire antennas they are
really simple till you get to the matching network. but with the SGC,
it does all the work for you. They are a bit pricey but not bad when
you compare the price to a multi band vertical that has the radiation
patern of my cantenna.
just my 2 cents worth

antenna. I've tried a inverted V, but my tower is not high enough for
the inverted V to work right. In your opinion, what is a good 80
meter antenna that is not to expensive to build?
