Hart,
Have done all of the above.
The size should be at least big enough that it doesn't break
in the wind. Don't really think whether stranded or solid really
matters in the real world. If you use insulated wire, it might change the
resonate frequency a bit, but both insulated and uninsulated
work very well.
The important thing ,IMHO, is to use a wire that is a good
conductor...ie...copper, aluminum, silver....NOT
steel, stainless etc.
