As little as 33 feet will be suitable for 40-10M. The total length of
the wire is measured from the end of the tuner. I would get as much
wire up as high as you can. If you have to make a few angled turns,
that will generally be OK, i.e. it doesn't have to be in a perfectly
straight line in one plane. Don't forget a good ground! Usually a
ground rod or the cold water system is satisfactory (assuming you have
metal piping). You may also need some simple 1/4 wave counterpoises for
some or all bands that you're using, if you find that you're having
problems with RF in the shack nipping at your lips when you use the
microphone or your fingers when you adjust the tuner. But you should
start out without the counterpoises and use them only if it's necessary.
I use end fed random wires routinely when I travel and have had
remarkable success with installations that I thought would never "get
out." The better the ground the better things will work.
