Sounds like you are building a J-Pole. I am assuming it is for VHF.
Further assumption is that no ant tuner is to be used, therefore you desire
to keep the VSWR within the range that can be handled by your HT. With that
in mind, be sure you "tune/prune" the antenna with the PVC pipe considered.
I built one, tuned it outside the pvc and when placed in the pvc, VSWR
changed considerably. So figure/compensate so that you are o.k. when in the
pvc tube.
