Hmmm.... I was just remembering 25 years ago, when I got my first tech
license, had a 2m handi-talki, and had no idea on earth what a random wire
was. Nor did I care! Needed an HF radio for that, and school kids can't
afford it. Guess I am just a slow learner. Should have known what a random
wire was before I ever got on 2m. How stupid of me, being a beginner back
then. To be a real ham, you must be born with complete knowledge.
Just for the record, since I have seen the makings of a flame war here, but
no answer yet....
A random wire is a wire antenna, end fed - usually from a tuner. It is
called random because it is usually as long as you can make it, without
regard to resonance on any band. It might be anything from 1/10 wave at 28
MHz up to 5 wavelengths or more on 1.8 MHz. Typically, it is partly
vertical, partly horizontal, and hung from trees, fences, or whatever is
available. Straight lines are not necessary either. Some work great, some
not well at all. YMMV.
I understand there is an Aussie version, called the randung wire. It is
suspended between tall piles of BS from operators who were born with a
license and never asked a question in their lives, stupid or not.

Who has never been down under, and has no randung wire here.
