Wes
I am sorry I did not answer your question and I should have!!
A "random wire" antenna is a length of wire that is non-resonant and =
end-fed or coupled to the radio via some sort of matching system such as =
an Antena Tuner.
In other words it is just a length of wire that is of no particular =
length other than to go the distance you wish to run it..
A resonant length of wire is one that is calculated to be a halfwave or =
quarterwave length at a particular frequency and that frequency is =
usually in the 160 or 80Mtr band so that it can be matched, with some =
ease, on a harmonically related higher frequency...
For example if the wire length was calculated to be a halfwave length on =
80Mtrs then it would be ok to use on 40-20 and 10Mtrs with relative ease =
in matching it to the transmitter..
The random wire length is just a length that fits between point A and =
point B with no frequency design in mind and with an appropritate type =
of matching system can be made to work on various frequencies {bands} =
where it is desired..
I hope you can understand my explanation as I am not too good at writing =
this type of thing..
