Good Afternoon All,
Well sounds like some interesting stories are being told about indoor
antennas, so please let me briefly share my experiences. I lived in a 3
story townhome in northern Virginia. In the attic I managed to assemble a 3
element 10 meter yagi while laying on my stomach across rafters and amongst
the insulation. It was fixed on europe and worked pretty good. I also
managed to hang a slinky from one edge of the attic to the other...required
a GOOD tuner but it worked. My shack was in the basement of the 3 story
townhouse, right next to the gas furnace which had an aluminum chimney (from
the basement through the roof)...are you getting the picture? Using the
single wire input of my tuner, I ran a wire to the chimney just above the
furnace and loaded that vertical on all bands, INCLUDING 160 meters where I
never worked any DX but I could regularly work into the far West of the USA
on topband (thanks in no small measure to those guys with the beverage
receiving antennas). I later managed to put up a trap vertical (14AVQ) in
the backyard,in between the telephone distribution box, the cable
distribution box and a HUGE in ground power transformer/distribution unit
for 6 or 8 townhomes. The radial system for my vertical consisted of tying
all of the grounds of the telephone/TV/power xfmr together. How did all
this work? In 12 years, I managed to work right at 300 countries (I don't
remember the exact number), almost ALL on CW of course. My apologies for
the long message, but hopefully it will give some ideas and inspiration to
others that may find themselves in a similar situation. I've found out that
hams will always find a way to get on the air and I'm sure those with severe
restrictions will also be successful...at least I certainly hope so! I had
a close friend who loaded the aluminum downspouts of his townhome with great
success and another that made a horizontal loop by laying wire along the
front, back and sides of his roof, feeding it with concealed tv twinlead
feeding one corner. Good luck....again my apologies if this was too long
and boring..
Sincere 73
