Some times the application of an antenna will determine
its physical and electrical characteristics. Some antennas
are for high gain in a narrow direction, some are for
local coverage, and some have to fit in whatever space the
user has available. The B&W 3 to 30, or whatever, antenna
was not designed to be very good on any one frequency. It
was not designed for ham operators. And it was not designed
to be examined very closely. It was designed for military
and other governmental agencies who needed to operate many
high frequencies on one antenna. Spread Spectrum and
Automatic Link Equipment (ALE) are two. It can be found
at our embassies throughout the world. It fitted well on
some ships when tilted. It was common at Communications
Security (COMSEC) monitoring facilities. But nobody ever
said it was anything but a broadband antenna. Anyone who
wants to use it in ham radio should understand the reasons
for its design, and don't expect too much.
