In Seattle in the early 1960s there were a couple rock n roll
stations continually fighting it out for top spot. KJR 950 in
1961 had this shtick where they'd announce they were calling
outer space and then would turn off the carrier for a half minute,
supposedly listening for replies from the flying saucers or what
ever. There were a couple of young high school guys who couldn't
resist the bait and modified the tuning of their very big Tesla coil
to 950 kc/s and then loaded it up into a long wire antenna. When
KJR went off the air for its listening period, they went on with
morse code, sending "pi", 3.1416....... several times. The pretty
sophisticated rationale being, this was some kind of universal
recognized figure. When KJR came back on, the DJ said, "Wow-
the switchboard is lighting up! People are calling in, they heard
something! ( An audio tape, made off-air from KJR of the event,
still exists. ) KJR later organized a welcoming picnic for its fans,
along with a large open space for any saucers to land if they
wanted to attend, but no more was heard from the extraterrestials.
Sorry, off topic, but i had to tell this one.
