Hi George
Read your note on your current antenna.
I have made a program to evaluate beam antenna patterns using your RX and
antenna to obtain real data (not a simulation). By obtaining the pattern at
different frequencies you can determine in which part of the band the beam gives
the best front/back and beam width. Both of these factors are related to total
gain as you might imagine and can get more info on this in the ARRL handbook
and Antenna publications.
Another point is getting a good idea of the SWR across the band. A very wide
SWR would probably indicate a lossy problem or very unusual detuning of the
elements.
My program currently uses a computer joystick input and simple connections to
the AGC or S meter signals. Am working on using the communications port of
Kenwood and Yaesu computerized rigs and should have these working shortly.
You can check out the program by going to:
http://hometown.aol.com/azantennas
There you can download a demo program and see its many features that allow
you to use a friend as a local signal source or use on the air signals that are
unaware of your using them. The results have been very good and repeatable.
If this interests you, try it out and I'll send you a complimentary copy.
