Hello hart,
Building one's own antenna system has many advantages over buying a
commercial antenna. First of all, since you have a restricted space, you
can choose a wire type that will be easily hidden, and can also be
configured to fit the available space. Aside from saving a lot of money,
you will learn a lot about antennas, and their construction methods. The
knowledge gained, plus the satisfaction of building your own gear cannot be
equaled. Just reading a few articles in the ARRL handbook, or any other
text will give you a good foundation for designing and building your own
antennas.
