Are you speaking of 1/4w or 1/2w verticals here Jim? Do you understand
the difference? You seem to be lumping them all in one group ...

Ground loss ... matching ... those would be two reasons to consider ...

At what height above ground? 0.1w ? 0.5w ? 1.0w ? It makes a difference.

Define "adequate" ? My dummy load is adequate for certain purposes ...
There IS a reason for having extensive ground planes under vertical
antennas ... (think PERFORMANCE) or being next to salt water ... :-)
