Chris - The top hat spoke length is not critical. It is only active on 40
meters and a few inches either way won't make major shifts in the resonant
frequency. I have used them with the top hat missing. Try 8 inches.
My dad still uses a 14AVQ I installed new as a novice in 1965. I replaced
all the trap end caps and replaced a trap spacer or two for him about 10
years ago.
They are good solid reliable antennas when installed over a good ground
system. Lots of us 1960s era novices cut our teeth on them. - Dr. Megacycle
