David,
I also have a Subaru (a 2001 Outback), and would like to install
a 2m/440 antenna on it. I haven't done it yet because I just can't
decide where to put the thing. I was wondering what type of
mount you use (NMO, magnetic?) and where you placed it on
the roof. Also, are you driving an Outback as well or another
model?
Thanks and 73,

Hi Dave,...
My Subaru is older...1992...a Legacy-L wagon
Antenna Mount...
When I first got the car I didn't want to be poking holes in it, so I took
the roof rack all apart to see what I could do. I ended up bringing 1/4
inch coax up inside the passenger side doorframe, through a totally hidden
hole in the roof at the passenger side corner of the roof rack (which was
weathertight, but I sealed the coax pass-thru with silicone caulk, too).
So then I could run the coax thru the roof rack parts to mount the
antenna's NMO base in/on a roof rack cross-member. I had to put about a 1
1/4 inch hole in the underside of the hollow roof rack member so I could
get to the mounting nut of where I had bored a hole on its top-side just
large enough for the antenna's NMO base mount/stud. My plan was to go to
the wrecking yard and obtain another roof rack member so that I could put
it all back to original when I sold the car...some years later, and I have
not done that yet! (-: But,... I have so much Ham stuff in it that I
cannot bring myself to sell it anyway...it'd take me a year to get all my
stuff reinstalled in something else... (-: Someday I'll have to post
some photos of it all.
Remote Head Mount...
If you are mounting a remote head which controls your radio, you might be
interested in what I did. My Subaru had a pull-out cup holder in the
center of the dashboard. It was about 1/2 inch thick and about 6-7 inches
wide. I simply pulled it straight on out and have it saved for if I ever
sell the car. I fashioned a piece of acrylic plastic sheet about 1/2 inch
thick to slide (slightly firmly) into the cupholder slot. I beveled the
front edge in two directions so that the IC-706's remote head could be
mounted to it while tilted both upward and to the left toward the driver
seat. It is now in perfect place in my car, and NO tacky damage to the
interior.
