Tobbe,
It is best to test the antenna in its permanent location, but you can
test the antenna holding it in the air by hand if you want to. The
antenna will likely test better in a proper installation, but should
work OK. Most antennas can be tested this way with the MFJ259B the pole
your friend mentioned will likely test better than by hand but all
should look OK.

Subject: [Antennas] Can someone tell me...
Hello all,
The question I have is as follows:
I bought an Icom AH-7000 discone antenna a while ago, and will soon put
it
on the roof and when that is done I will measure it with a MFJ-259B SWR
analyzer so I know how it will perform. So far - so good.
Now here is the problem, the friend I have who owns the MFJ-259B says I
don't have to put it on the roof before measuring, it will perform
exactly
the same if I put it on a three meter pipe on the ground somewhere else
with
another, shorter cable.
And now the question, is he right or do I have to put it on the roof in
order to get it right??
I know the MFJ-259B only cover up to 170 MHz, but it's more important to
me
to transmit on 50 and 146 MHz than UHF.
Thanks
Best regards
