The longer you make the wire (beyond several wavelengths) the more
directional it becomes -- bi-directional off the ends. If you terminate
the far end with a non-inductive resistor of about 350 ohms (to ground)
the L/W becomes uni-directional off the far end. At three wavelengths
long the major lobe will form an angle with the wire at 30 either side,
at six wavelengths the angle of the main lobe will be 20 . Antennas
shorter than 2 wavelengths are not properly called "long wires," the
term for the shorter wire is "random" wire.
