Well, the best is a commercial Station Master, but they are very expensive,
and wear out too, due to wind blown salt (in RI) and sand which etch the
outer coating of the radome. We had one but it wore out after about 20
years, so we replaced it with Diamond, repeater type, dual bander. We had
two at our site, and both flooded and were unuseable after about 3
years. So we replaced the 2 meter one with a Hustler repeater
antenna. Cost is reasonable, and it has been up for three years without a
hitch. It's not as high gain as the Diamond, but it is more rugged and
doesn't have internal phasing cables and doesn't have a fiberglass radome
like the Station Master or Diamond that can be etched with salt or
sand. All is on the outside, so there is nothing to flood. It is on a 80'
water tank, ground elevation 220' and it sees a lot of wind and some salt
spray as it is about 2 miles from Narragansett Bay in Portsmouth RI, on the
windy side of the island.
