Well Ed, there have been some excellent responses to your query. I have used parallel dipoles for over 15 years now and have been very happy with the results. I have a 80/40 and a 160/30/17. I don't like
traps inasmuch, as George pointed out, they do restrict you in bandwidth. Also you have to decide whether to spend money and buy or go through the complications of making them. I use #12 TW plastic
covered house wire that you can buy from Home Depot or any electrical supply house on 500 or 1000 ft spools for all my wire antennas. The plastic actually shortens the physical length but parallel dipoles
have to be "tuned" to resonance by VSWR anyway. I use 6 inch separation using spacers made from 1/2 inch white plastic pipe. I do use W2DU bead baluns that I make from the kits sold by The Wireman. Again
I use plastic pipe to enclose them. The antennas do droop a bit from my center point at 50 ft on my tower but I have worked Europe on both 80 and 40 so they do pay off. SWR will probably be in the range
of 1.3:1 min. At least I've never got any better than that. My 2.0:1 VSWR bandwidth is 170 KHz on 40 and 240 KHz on 80. Incidentally, while not as good as the teflon coated as used by the military, if you
use the plastic covered TW wire it certainly cuts down on precipitation static from rain and snow. ( we don't get sand storms here, Hi ) Have fun and good luck. Keith, VE3JKC.
