Hi Mike,
Yes, I've used that stuff just like you described and
it's good, plus it's faster to build. However, I found
it to be a little heavier and it catches the wind more
than the 1/2" OD CPVC. For some reason, my wife thinks
it's ugly, too. She thinks the off-white CPVC is
acceptable... and when mama ain't happy, the family
ain't happy. I see everyone is nodding their heads
here.
I've looked for this exact same material in 3/8" which
to me would be PERFECT but I don't think they make it
in that size (exhaustive study, I visited three home
centers and they didn't have it).
20 years ago I purchased some 2" spacing open wire
line made with 16AWG solid wire and these wierd little
spacers that the wire had been MELTED into. This stuff
was invisible, had no wind loading to speak of and was
cheap.
