I work with the Boy Scouts and where we go is away from most cell towers.
Cell service can be a real problem.
We had one adult that carried a 14 element Yagi. He used a short push-up
and coax. He had contacted the cell provider for the location of the cell
towers in the area, before the trip. He had programmed into his GPS all the
locations in the area. It was a simple procedure to turn the GPS on and
look for the closest tower. The GPS could then tell the direction and
distance to the tower. Then taking a compass, he turned the antenna toward
the tower.
It worked very well for the link back when he needed it.
