[Antennas] Building antennas

OM,
The "beer can" vertical........... BURP!!
Made one whilst overseas with the service sometime between 68-70 (the
precise
time lost in the mists of time..HI!) Rather than soldering, I epoxied
them end to end
(perhaps because they had aluminum tops and bottoms) and ran a jumper to
the
tinned seam between each can. Put it on a coke bottle and it worked
fine.
As for the lack of antennae builders.....
The times, they have been a-changin'. The tenor of the era seems to be
"punch the
button and go." A model is contrived and the antennae is assumed to
perform per
the printout.
Any testing or measurement is derided as "cut and try." Common sense
is sacrificed upon the altar of SWR. The relentless search for the last
.009 dB of
gain (real or imagined) goes on unimpeded by sanity or technical
relevance.
Of all the examples, perhaps the one that is most sadly amusing is the
sale of "dipole
kits." To quote from the great 20th century philosopher Sam Kinison:
"how does
that work?" Seems to me that anyone capable of putting up a dipole
should have
the mental and physical ability to measure a length of wire, mount the
insulators
and solder the feedline in place.
Perhaps having the latest "super thunder blaster limited platinum
professional
turbo deluxe premium special deluxe extreme" antenna carries more cachet
than
"homebrew." It must work better, it cost more. (Barnum's Theorem not
withstanding)
And so it goes.
