[Antennas] How can I tell if my signal is getting out?

Isn't it amazing how things have changed!!
Remember when a novice was crystal controlled transmit (rock bound)?
It was the norm for the cw frequencies to be different unless you were lucky 
enough to contact another with the identical crystal you had. Seems kind of 
primitive, but it was fun.
