I think that was it. 
I ran 
	└─$ ls -l Makefile.*
	-rw-r--r-- 1 lloyd wheel 18418 Apr 16 11:35 Makefile.am
	-rw-r--r-- 1 lloyd wheel 130570 Apr 16 11:35 Makefile.in
	┌──(lloyd@ceph4)-[/vol/…/external/mit/isl/dist]
	└─$ touch Makefile.in 
and the build seems to be proceeding now.
I'm having a poke at the build rules in Makefile.in to see if I can
make this more robust.
