You'll have to pass the `-march=i386' flag to GCC and use the portable C
routines in libcrypto instead of the preferred faster assembly code.

In general yes, but I thought NetBSD 4 still supported i386, so this
should just happen?

It's more like NetBSD 4 contained the leftovers of i386 support. It doesn't mean anyone actively tested that for ages.
