Ah. So all I have is a case of SunOS, erm, "traditional userland"?
OTOH, mk/tools/tools.SunOS has
.if exists(/usr/bin/gtar)
TOOLS_PLATFORM.gtar?= /usr/bin/gtar
TOOLS_PLATFORM.tar?= /usr/bin/gtar
.elif exists(/usr/sfw/bin/gtar)
TOOLS_PLATFORM.gtar?= /usr/sfw/bin/gtar
TOOLS_PLATFORM.tar?= /usr/sfw/bin/gtar
.endif
where on omnios neither of the paths has a "gtar". There is 
/usr/sbin/tar. And there is /usr/gnu/bin, but it doesn't have a tar 
either.
I guess I might use
.if ${OPSYS} == "SunOS"
EXTRACT_USING= bsdtar
.endif
