I managed to get past it by doing a one-line change in the bootstrap script:
case "$cwrappers" in
yes|no)
echo "USE_CWRAPPERS= $cwrappers" >> ${TARGET_MKCONF}
+ echo "USE_CWRAPPERS= $cwrappers" >> ${BOOTSTRAP_MKCONF}
echo "" >> ${TARGET_MKCONF}
;;
esac
